Volunteer companies formed the main defense against fires in early-day Vallejo. But because of bitter rivalries, some hot-headed men in a disbanded crew were blamed for deliberately torching another company's station in 1877, destroying the building and all its fire-fighting equipment. 'No one was arrested for the deed, though nearly everybody was satisfied as to who was responsible for it,' pioneering Vallejo publisher Frank Leach wrote in his 1917 memoir, 'Recollections of a Newspaperman: A Record of Life and Events in California.
