Three new books have provided a mother lode of little-known details about Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo, his ascent to wealth and power in California under Spanish and Mexican flags, and the dream-shattering loss of that status following California's 1849 entry into the Union. The books include the two-volume Recuerdos: Historical and Personal Remembrances Relating to Alta California, 1769-1849, more than 400,000 words written in Spanish by Vallejo in the late 1800s and newly translated and edited by scholars Rose Marie Beebe and Robert M.
